The Royal Ballet asked me to design a cake to
celebrate their 75th anniversary.
This is the design I came up with.
I decided to create the cake as a large informal party table in the shape of 75, and
place figures around the table to represent the four resident
choreographers of the last 75 years along with a figure of Princess
Aurora from sleeping beauty, one of the first full length ballets staged by the
Royal, and re-staged by most of the Directors over the past 75 years.
The figures chosen were the
The Red King from checkmate, Madame Ninette de Valois'
masterpiece,
The Tall girl from Sir Kenneth McMillan's Elite Syncopations,
David Bintley's fantastic
Zebra from the stunning Penguin Cafe ( which along with the Sleeping beauty also incorporates the Birmingham Royal
Ballet nicely ) and finally the figure from The fabulous
Symphonic
Variations , choreographed by Sir Frederick Ashton.
